Performing superconducting characterisation (critical current, magnetisation), and analysing the results.Assessing mechanical deformation characteristics of wires on rolling and cabling in relation to their design, experimentally and/or by modelling.Analysing phase transformations and diffusion during heat treatment.Performing electron microscopy and quantitative image analysis of superconducting wires.Designing studies and extracting conclusions to guide wire development collaborations with manufacturers and research institutes. This project contributes to the characterisation and optimisation of wire designs by: In the context of the High Field Magnets (HFM) programme, CERN is working to develop and characterise novel Nb3Sn wires, in collaboration with manufacturers and research partners, and to qualify and cable them for use in model magnets. This has driven intense research worldwide, resulting in exciting innovations including 'internal oxidation' for nano-scale optimisation of superconductor microstructures, but many challenges remain. The 16 T magnet designs proposed for future energy-frontier circular colliders demand Nb3Sn superconducting wires with performance exceeding the current state of the art.
